Animals Galore, and a Big Hole in the Ground!

Dates of travel: various trips throughout 2009

As I mentioned in the previous post, this job has led to me spending a lot of time in South Africa. Throughout 2009, I went there an additional 4 times. This post is just for a few more photos taken throughout those trips.

Pilansberg Game Reserve, North West Province

A hungry elephant.
A little bit of scenery.
A male impala has a munch.
A male Springbok, checking for food and/or danger.
A herd of Giraffes.
A herd of Elephants crossed the road directly in front of us.

Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, Guateng Province

An over-sized chicken... I mean... an Ostrich.
A sleepy Lion (they're always sleepy).
Lunch time for these Rhinos.
A couple of Gemsbok (a.k.a. Oryx).
This Lion looks slightly more awake than most.
Of course, playing with the cubs again!
Snake demonstration.
A Siberian Tiger (yes, not exactly African, but they have a couple anyway!).
The Big Hole, Kimberley, Northern Cape

Kimberley was founded when diamonds were found in the area. For some significant time, it drew people from all over the world to dig for diamonds. "The Big Hole" is the main excavation site; a massive hole dug by hand into a Kimberlite pipe as people tried to strike it lucky.

Some old style cars from the period when mining was booming.
A hearse from the period.
One of the main streets through the (recreated) town.
The Kimberley Pub.
The Big Hole, now filled with rather toxic water! Check the buildings for perspective of its size...!
Some stats on the hole.
A recreation of the type of mining tunnels that people worked and walked in.
