Epic Honeymoon - Day 31 - Lyon

Clear skies and beautiful vistas in Lyon.
Departing Barcelona started very early; we were walking down La Rambla with our luggage at 6am to get the metro. At first, I couldn’t work out why so many Barcelonians were up and about at that time, but then I realised it was Sunday morning, and they were just heading home from a night in the clubs! Ahhh, youth! We made our way to the airport to farewell Spain, moving to the neighbour in the north, starting with a visit to the centre of food culture in Lyon, France.

From Lyon airport, it was a bit of a walk out to the train station, but an otherwise relatively simple transfer. The best option to get to the city is the Rhône Express train. It’s not cheap at about €16 per person one way, but it gets you there. Transferring at Lyon Part-Dieu, the major central station, we took the metro to Guillotière (we worked out later that would could have taken the tram to the same stop, avoid a connection, but... live and learn!).

The beautiful view over the Rhône in Lyon.
We met with the host of our next AirBnB, Yannick, and checked in. The room was great – it’s like a student accommodation building, with all the basic needs right there in the room. And one of the best parts was the elevator! After all the stairs of Barcelona, we were very happy to see this. This listing is within easy walking of central Lyon, and is a great option for a short visit.

We really liked this room in Lyon; simple but extremely pleasant!
In the early afternoon, we strolled across Pont de la Guillotière in search of sustenance, and happened across Rue des Marronniers, on your left after you cross the bridge. This little laneway is packed with restaurants from end to end, offering a variety of cuisines and reasonable prices. Our first Lyonnaise meal was taken at À la Pêche aux Moules, which roughly translates to “to fishing for mussels”. And they certainly have been doing plenty of that! The menu offers a range of mussel dishes, with a normal serve being 500g. Mussels don’t do anything for me, but Avy loves them. I tucked into a salmon fillet instead!

Salad to start.

Mussels of the house.

Salmon fillet.

And a little dessert to finish things off!
Being a Sunday, Lyon was in a pretty sleepy mode, with only a few shops open. So, after lunch, we walked up Rue de la République and on a little further before crossing back over the river for the evening.

Watching the water flow.

A delightful afternoon stroll through the trees.
