The gorgeous bar at Brauhaus Joh Albrecht. |
Hamburg is a charming city, but certainly has a more
industrial than tourist feel to it. In hindsight, we probably should have
detoured slightly further en route to Denmark and visited Berlin instead. But
having said that, it was still a nice place to drop in and have a few easy days
– it’s just a shame about the weekend and public holiday in our timing!
And so, another morning sojourn into Hamburg centre to
enjoy the cool Autumn air. Some buskers were showing off their unique talents
that obviously involve some well-concealed metal rods, or something similar.
Our wanders took us past a Nespresso shop with wall-to-wall capsules on
display; we partook in a free sample coffee to get the morning going.

Walls and walls of coffee. |
Admiring some incredulously priced watches in the windows
of Jaeger Le Coultre, we stopped in for a nice German lunch at Brauhaus Joh
Albrecht along one of the canals. Sausage, pork knuckles, pretzel, sauerkraut,
and craft beer… ahhh! This is what I was waiting for! Definitely a great place
to stop in for a good feed in the backstreets of Hamburg city centre.

And a nice big pork sausage for me! |
The rest of the day was spent with more street
wandering and a little shopping at Europa Passage. I suspect that, with the
public holiday coming the following day, a lot of people probably took the
extra holiday to make a nice long weekend, so there wasn’t a lot going on for
us tourist folk!
