Having had a good taste of Copenhagen, we planned for Day
51 to add another country to our list – pretty much just because we could! Just
across the water from Copenhagen lies the city of Malmo, Sweden. Back in the
day, it would be a boat trip to get across there, but in more recent years,
those ingenious Scandinavians built a bridge! Now, it’s just a short drive to get
there.
The ticket is bought as essentially a round trip, but
more accurately, it’s for two rides. Boarding the bus (number 999) from HovedbanegĂ„rden,
just near Copenhagen Central Station, we were on our way and after winding
through the southern suburbs for a bit, we eventually hit the bridge and over
the water we went…

A quick coffee before heading to the bus. |

Up and over! |
This is about all of Sweden that we got to see... |
… but that was about as far as we got. Perhaps we had
been in the Eurozone too long, treating everything like one big country. As we
arrived to the other side of the water, we were advised that the Swedish border
guards would be coming on to the bus to check everyone’s ID. We had made a note
to ourselves the previous evening that we should bring our passports with us,
but on the day, it completely slipped our minds. I had my driver’s license, and
Avy had no form of ID.
We were asked to de-bus while the head guard thought over
our situation. For a while, it looked like they were going to allow us in… but
then they sent the bus on its way and informed us we would be escorted to the
train station and put on a train back to Copenhagen. Tough, but fair. And we
were not the only ones – an Indian (living in Denmark) couple made the same
mistake. It sucked to not get to visit Sweden for the day (though we
technically did set foot on Swedish soil), but we will just have to make a plan
to go back!
We spent our thus unplanned day back in Copenhagen doing
a bit more wandering and window-shopping. And a little bit of actual shopping,
too!
I really enjoyed our time in Copenhagen, with its
friendly people and laid-back, hipster-ish atmosphere. I think I would
definitely like to come back. But for now, we were done, and it was time to
head way out to the north-west, in the middle of the Norwegian Sea…
