The flight we were supposed to take to Reykjavik! |
Day 52 was supposed to see us make the trip from
wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen (as the song goes) out to the supposedly
accidently discovered Viking expansion of Iceland. As I previously mentioned,
my fondness of the TV series Vikings got me right into the history of these
sea-faring people. Having seen into season 5 after we returned from honeymoon,
they would have you believe Floki landed on these fabled shores after handing
himself to the gods and the tides. While Floki maybe have been a real person, this
is not quite how Iceland was found, but Floki did live out his days on this
intriguing and beautiful island.
Having made our journey down to Copenhagen airport, handing
ourselves to the air currents and the gods (of IcelandAir) and thinking we were
saying farewell to the Danes, we faced a bit of a wait at our gate. Our flight was
gradually late, then delayed, then delayed some more, and then finally…
cancelled! A massive storm had been approaching and then finally crossed
directly over Reykjavik, and this meant planes were simply unable to land there
for the remainder of the day.

A scuffle ensued as everyone lined up at the
counter to receive a voucher for the airport-adjoined Clarion Hotel. At the
time of our visit, it had recently been bought out and refurbished for several
million dollars. We were put up in a very comfortable room, and treated to a
basic, but pleasant dinner before retiring ahead of an early make-up flight the
next day to finally reach Reykjavik.

Simple, but adequate. |
We eventually reached Reykjavik on Day 53!
